SEPARATORS #1 Review

Will Steven come any closer to protecting the Xenoglyphs? Read on to find out.

The official description from OSSM Comics:

A group known as The Separators are tasked with keeping nine ancient, elemental stones apart. Steven, Dom, Jennifer, Bailey, and Carlton race around the globe to protect the stones before the evil Anubis can unite them, bringing a world draped in darkness for him to control.

Separators1VariantXenoglyphs did a wonderful job of creating a brand new world of the impossible, twisting the fabric of history and myth, and creating a new kind of power struggle. Separators only goes to expand on that, as though there are a few issues I have with this opening chapter, the concept itself keeps growing in abundance.

Omar Spahi really grabbed my attention with Xenoglyphs, but there were times when I felt things escalated a little too quickly. This proves to be the case again with Separators, as though the issue does a terrific job of branching out, there are some things that could have been handled better. The main thing that bugged me was the introduction of new character Ryan, who seemed a little too eager to follow Steven into danger. Despite this there was still a lot to entice about this opening issue, with the exploration of different Xenoglyphs, and hint of something bigger having me hooked for more.

Peejay Catacutan continues to handle the artwork on this tale, giving a sleek, polished look to this world. Despite the inks being a little rough at times, with strange facial proportions, the majority of his work is to a high standard. The layout is engaging, giving a very mysterious overtone to proceedings, whilst at the same time giving a dramatic flow to the action. The thing that impressed me most about Catacutan’s art was his colours, with the texture and vibrancy giving a punchy finish.

Separators may not have enticed me as much as Xenoglyphs, with certain story developments being a bit sudden, but one thing this issue does well is engage. It’s this and the mysterious edge that makes this a series I recommend trying, but at the same time I do hope there’s some improvement.
