Sally of the Wastelands #2 Review

How will Sally, Kat and Tommy continue their journey now that they’re stranded without a ship? Read on to find out.

The official description from Titan:

The hellspawn of Victor Gischler (X-Men, Angel & Faith, Noir) and newcomer Tazio Bettin, Sally is as sexy as she is psychotic. She and the crew of the Mississippi Duchess have found their trip down the mutant-infested bayous of post-apocalyptic Louisiana, interrupted by giant killer crawgators!

Their ship sunk, the crew scattered, Sally is keen to find out what became of her dumb blonde himbo, Tommy. However, she has drawn the unwelcome attention of a boatload of unsavory cannibal types…

Sally2_preview1.jpg.size-600Sally of the Wastelands first issue left me with mixed feelings regarding it’s story, as though the premise seemed intriguing, there were some issues regarding it’s execution. Things do however look up in this issue, as though there are still some minor problems, the general shift in pace, and increase in intensity allows our tale to take a more energized tone.

Angel & Faith Season 10 writer Victor Gischler is the scribe behind this tale, having fleshed out a very entertaining post-apocalyptic story so far. The key point of his writing so far has to be of main character Sally, and her eccentric personality. Her over the top attitude may feel tiring at times, but the general liveliness of this gal certainly injects energy when needed. Apart from this Gischler does a fabulous job of introducing warrior Bamazons (Amazons from Alabama), as well as showing a more sinister side to Captain Sam.

Tazio Bettin handles the artwork on this series, doing a solid job throughout. Despite the odd facial expression feeling a bit plain, Betting gives a very lively atmosphere, with his layouts allowing the story to flow smoothly. It is however the action sequences that he excels in the most, with the brutal panels being both beautiful and gory, taking the series to the level of intensity it needs to be at. Bettin also produces his own colours with his striking palette giving a very rich tone to the series.

Sally of the Wastelands starts to show some improvement, with the intense action being gory and beautiful. Recommended.
