Magnus: Robot Fighter #7 Review

What will happen when Magnus and Leeja run the gauntlet? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

In this issue: Transmech Catchers. Soft Robots. Computers that are guns. Ultraviolent versions of video games that aren’t actually video games because everybody that plays will probably die. Welcome to THE BUTCHER BLOC, from acclaimed creators FRED VAN LENTE (Marvel Zombies, Conan The Avenger) and CORY SMITH (Fathom, TMNT)!

Magnus07CovSubscriptSmithThere’s definitely a shift of power in this chapter, as bar Senator Clane’s problems, Magnus and Leeja are also in a spot of trouble. Being put into a gauntlet style fight, the two enemies have to work together if they want to survive, with the outcome being rather interesting. The excitement throughout this issue is also at it’s best, with the action, and suspense being very enthralling.

Fred Van Lente has done a fabulous job of making Magnus one of the key players in Dynamite’s Golden Key series. Though to be fair all four series have excelled at one point or another. In this issue Van Lente gives a very energetic flow, with the interaction between Magnus and Leeja, and the general aspect of the two characters getting to know each other better being a focal point. Despite this he also gives some gripping development elsewhere, with Senator Clane becoming a rather desperate man.

Cory Smith yet again does a phenomenal job on the artwork, but the accompanying art from Sandy Jarrell was just horrific in comparison. Being too rough, and feeling rather rushed, Jarrell’s art just feels out of place, giving a rather underwhelming intro to this issue. On the other hand it does make Smith’s art shine all the more, with his highly detailed art being as awesome as ever. Smith also captures the energy of Van Lente’s script brilliantly, with the explosive atmosphere, and quirky character expression adding great tone. Colourist Maurîcio Wallace also impresses once more, with his soft, vibrant art allowing the action to leap off the page.

Magnus: Robot Fighter once again excels in giving explosive action, as though the additional art from Jarrell felt out of place, the overall atmosphere was electric. The team-up from Magnus and Leeja was also a nice addition, teasing at a possible future. Highly recommended
