Hellboy in Hell #6 Review

With all that’s going on in the world of B.P.R.D. should we really care what happens with this red monkey? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Hellboy revisits an old vampire acquaintance in the bowels of Hell.

Hellboy in Hell 6_Preview PageThere’s a lot that could be said about this particular comic book series. But the chief compliment I can pay its creator is that there’ve been quite a few titles that have ventured into the bowels of eternal suffering but this is by far my favorite. And it has a lot to do with our iconic hero and the moody atmosphere he faces down with each passing page. In short: this is a must own release for any fanboy or fangirl!

Franchise creator Mike Mignola pens the script and once again proves why this is not only a competent idea but a worthwhile series in its own right. He takes our familiar protagonist and uses him as a connection point. Because of that we get a street level perspective on the geography of Hell and trust me it’s a bleak run through. Even so the charisma of our primary keeps the events entertaining, and when a nuisance from 1982 gets involved the book ebbs and flows with personality. It’s a simple read that makes use of its space while keeping its wits about, even in moments that could fall into corny waters.

Beyond the straight forward text the illustrations are really where this jaunt steps above the norm. Mike Mignola continues to deliver a dynamic display that never, for a second, questions its own intent. Sure pencil strokes create panels that are layered with darkness, and as you add in the colors done by Dave Stewart we’re left with an impressive display. I’m sure there are many detractors out there but for me I love the unique look of the book, it’s a bit different and fits within the boundless realm of the supernatural.

Hellboy in Hell #6 from start to finish is a must own release that earns both attention and praise. It easily earns a recommendation from me.
