Ghostbusters #14 Review

Is it time to lay the saga to rest? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The embodiment of chaos has taken an interest in earth, and the physical laws of the universe are beginning to come apart at the seams. When Newtonian physics falter in New York City and weirdness is on the rise, you know who’s gonna get called… “Mass Hysteria!” continues here!

Ghostbusters 14_Preview PageIt’s hard not to grin from ear to ear when I get to review this particular comic book. It continues the franchise I love, in the hands of a creative team that not only gets what made the original films worthwhile but also has the tenacity to inject their own personality into the proceedings. In short: the heroes you should call on are in good stride within these pages.

Even as things grow dark for our players, series scribe Erik Burnham knows how to keep the comedic fire alive. He allows all our favorite personalities to thrive, but it’s the witty banter that really sells everything that’s going on here. And as the chaos ramps up devoted followers can rest assured that this is one author who has a firm grasp on what the 30th anniversary means. In short: grab your proton pack my fellow fanboys and fangirls and get ready to bust some supernatural heads.

Right from the moment Dan Schoening graced these continuing adventures the title got complex and unique visualizations. His character work is quirky and original with just enough of their movie counterparts to make them recognizable. There’s a set of panels where we see some funky stuff with gravity and the illustrative master engages with ease and consistency. Add in the dynamic colors done by Luis Antonio Delgado and what we’re left with is without a doubt an awesome package.

Ghostbusters #14 is exactly the type of comic I hope to cover. It’s not something that changes the field but it’s a quality romp from beginning to end. To put it simply this release will leave with a simple reaction: bring on the rest of Mass Hysteria! Recommended.
