All New Fathom Banner

The deep odyssey that exists both above and below continues, but is this latest volume even worthy of your attention?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Aspen:

A new direction in the FATHOM Universe begins!

Aspen Matthews attempts to return to a normal life with her fellow humans after turning down the Blue’s pleas for help. However, the ice queen Vana and her deadly minions step up their machinations with a devastating attack on the surface world. Yet, the biggest surprise may be the return of one of Fathom’s most instrumental characters–and someone that shares a painful past with Aspen!

All New Fathom 2_CPrepare to dive back into some murky waters, as the creative team crafts something that can only be described as a natural extension of what we know.  It also becomes something more than the sum of its parts, as we get to see complications and wrinkles that build up the strength of this endeavor without cheapening what’s come before.

David Wohl pens the script and the scribe knocks it out of the park in a way that’s simply outstanding. By playing up the inner angst of our protagonist, we get an underlying current of humanity that allows this tale revolving around an ocean race and their growing issues to be understandable.  It’s that nuanced sense of self that allows the author to really dive right into the fray while crafting a skeletal structure that hits on the most important bullet points of the franchise.

I can’t say enough nice things about the art by Alex Konat.  The talent is a breath of fresh air that easily encapsulate the raw imagination associated with this longstanding property.  From the world above to the oceans below, he handles every panel with a level of care and consistency that’s a rare find indeed.  There were a couple renditions that seemed to be a bit below the norm but these did little to sully an otherwise sterling entry.

All New Fathom #2 is a great comic book that does more than enough right to not only garner attention but also earn praise.  Recommended.
