New Avengers #3 Review

The Illuminati have begun to set their plan into motion, but will it be enough to save the world? Or will they have to explore OTHER options?

Here is the summary from Marvel:

  • The Illuminati experience their first incursion since reforming.
  • Can the loose brotherhood of end times trust each other enough to use the Infinity Gems in unison?
  • And a new member joins the Illuminati!

The Illuminati have a plan to stop the incursion of worlds, gathering the Infinity Gems; but there is a problem. One of the holders (Charles Xavier) is kinda dead, but that snag is remedied when Hank McCoy takes his mentor’s place in the secretive organization. With all of the pieces in place they enact their plan; but when it fails and the gems are destroyed, what is next for the society? How far will they go to save their world?

Jonathan Hickman starts to up the ante with this issue, as it is a bit faster paced than the previous 2 outings. The danger is still lingering in the air, and you can feel it as the Illuminati grows more and more desperate. They in fact get so desperate that they even betray one of their own in order to preserve the world. You can tell that tension between the group is high as after the failed Infinity Gem attempt, they trust each other even less. Another good point in the story is the parts that focus on Beast. He is immediately thrust into this position of power and it is clear that he doesn’t know what to do or how to feel. His feelings (for the moment) are like T’Challa’s, that no one should have this kind of power, but it may be necessary. T’Challa also begins to act shadier as time passes as he now “speaks for a whole nation” and he will do whatever to save Wakanda.

Epting’s pencils still do wonders for this story. Keeping with that secretive atmosphere. Alot otf the issue is dialogue, which is to be expected with the new direction the book is taking. Luckily this is where Epting shines as he is adept at showing a wide range of emotions and knows how to get the readers to feel exactly how he wants with his pencils.

This issue New Avengers was certainly a step up from the previous 2 as the book seems to be finally getting it’s feet on the ground. The talking is over, it is time for serious action and next issue teases that they may have to seek help from a devourer of worlds to get the job done.
