Joe Quesada Calls Out DC

Joe Quesada sat down with the folks at SuperHeroComplex to talk about the big Marvel release of 2012, Avengers vs X-Men… but the conversation inevitably turned towards DC’s lineup, which is now 7 months into its reboot. The common rumor on the ‘street’ is that Marvel’s huge Mutie event is a response to the New 52, but Quesada begs to differ. This is what he had to say…

“Yeah, of course — that’s what people want to think,” Quesada said. “But let’s be clear: The DC relaunch is a response to everything Marvel’s been doing, and not the other way around. You don’t set fire to your entire house for no good reason. And by the way, I tip my hat to them. They did something daring and it worked for them. They boosted sales of some of their books. But ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ is something that’s been on our docket for publishing for several years now.”

You know, I hate to sound like a Marvel fanboy (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but Quesada is right on this point. Ever since Avengers: Disassembled the House of Ideas has been releasing yearly events that have been nothing short of revolutionary in the world of comics… and throwing the Avengers up against the X-Men doesn’t seem like that far fetched of a move. Seriously, this is the same company that pitted Captain America vs Iron Man just a few years ago. Hell, half the super-heroes on Earth were revealed to be Skrull sleeper agents in ’08. When you compare AvX to all those arcs, it actually seems like the least radical story that they’ve printed in the past few years.
