I Love Trouble #5 Review

The more I read I Love Trouble the more I love it. Corny, I know, but none the less true. Read on and I’ll give you the reasons you’ll love it too.

Official description from IMAGE:

Things just aren’t going well for Felicia, when she starts experiencing breaks with reality after her work as an assassin begins to take an emotional toll. Doesn’t help that she finds out just how deep Johnny’s betrayal goes, either.

Felicia is dealing with a lot and the first page of issue #5 illustrates that in a way only I Love Trouble can and we can see why she’s in trouble. Last issue gave us a look into Felicia’s psychiatric sessions and her dysfunctional relationship with Johnny. This time round we delve deeper and expand into her psyche, and while she tries to use her wit to maintain the walls she builds, we get to see a tangible manifestation of how she copes with her guilt.

There is also plenty of sequences of Felicia in action as an assassin and her methods which are inventive and gloriously grisly. Finally the truth is revealed to Felicia about Johnny’s double cross and his cheating ways with former friend Maggie who believes Felicia is dead. Her next move takes the story to the next level.

Writer Kel Symons knows how to handle this character with deft writing. He continues to give Felicia strength and determination while revealing a fragile state of mind all without making her a damsel in distress. Symons makes it clear that her mental state is the lynch pin but only Felicia will determine whether the bomb goes off or not. Mark Robinson’s art is such an integral part of this story and it’s simply a joy to read. Only Robinson makes it possible to “read” his art and still maintain fluid motion. He doesn’t draw a half bad kick to the face either. This creative team is in perfect sync.

You can’t help but love Felicia and still ache for her as she struggles with the ramifications of her powers and how they are used. But there isn’t a character I want to root for more than her. Give I Love Trouble a chance and I’m know you will too.
