Harbinger #19 Review

Harbinger #19 is where all the consequences of Toyo Harada’s attempt to keep Peter and his Renegades finally implodes and puts everyone in danger. Full of action, surprises and some off the wall psychic constructs makes this the most well rounded enjoyable books of the week.

Official Description from VALIANT:
Perfect Day no more! The grim truth behind the most shocking arc of Harbinger yet is finally revealed. Peter Stanchek prepares for the mental battle of his life, with the fate and freedom of his fellow Renegades hanging in the balance!

One of the things Harbinger has been leading to since the end of the Harbinger Wars in Las Vegas was the big payoff, especially since the massive shocking twist in issue #15. Harbinger #19 isn’t the “big” payoff but it is a major step forward in the story line. Joshua Dysart’s slow-burn to Harada’s mind squall has major repercussions for Peter and the rest of the Renegades “perfect day.” Harada can no longer control Peter and now is his chance to get his team free from the Harbinger Foundation. Dysart does it with plenty of action and drama but also throws in plenty of the abstract landscapes from Torquehalla and Monica Jim’s psychic projections. It fills the issue with fun, off-kilter humor and wackiness but still maintains the drama and seriousness of Peter’s escape

HAR019COVERRiley Rossmo again adds his own unique style to this issue in the mindscapes of Peter and Monica which lends a fresh and distinct parallel between reality and psionic space. Barry Kitson’s work maintains the action, flow and pace nicely and makes what could be an extremely confusing set of characters and circumstances easily digestible to even the newest of readers. He is a strong compliment to Dysart’s mind bending plot line.

This issue puts Peter and the Renegades on a new course and now that Peter is free it’s sure to get more action packed and messy. Harbinger #19 was a satisfying resolution to the “perfect day” scenario that Dysart so cleverly and expertly maneuvered readers through. Harbinger was easily one of my favorite titles this week and continues to be a jewel in Valiant’s crown. This title can surprise and shock you with it’s physic cornucopia of constructs and alternate realities but still is packed with action and suspense. Harbinger is easily one of the most dynamic and enjoyable comics going.
