FF #1 Review

The Fantastic 4 have assembled a new team to protect NY for 4 minutes, can they last that long?

Here is the summary from Marvel:

Marvel Now! shows you the future, and it’s fantastic! In the Fantastic Four’s absence, a hand-picked substitute squad—Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk and Miss Thing—must guard Earth and the fledgling Future Foundation for four minutes. What could go wrong?

Basically a continuation of the Fantastic Four comic released a couple of weeks ago, FF focuses on the state of the Future Foundation (That Fantastic Four’s scholastic institute) and how it will hold up while the Fantastic Four. Each member picks their own candidate, Mr. Fantastic choosing recently resurrected Ant-Man Scott Lang, Invisible Woman choosing the Queen of the Inhumans & Black Bolt’s wife, Medusa, Human Torch selecting Darla Deering AKA Miss Thing, & The Thing picking the Hulk’s feisty green skinned cousin, She-Hulk.

Matt Fraction also scripts this book as he does Fantastic Four, which makes sense since FF is essentially a Fantastic Four spin-off. The story focuses a bit more on Ant-Man than the other members. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since he is the only one on the the team who is hesitant to join. The dialogue between each of the characters is good, and there are interviews with the kids of the Future Foundation that add a little more to the story which is nice. It’s mostly padding but it does add some bit of insight into the children of the story.

Michael Allred’s art is visual appealing as usual, there a couple weird scenes here and there, but nothing too distracting. Nice clean pencil strokes and a well organized look give the book that unique Allred flair. Laura Allred’s colors also pop off the page while still flowing with the pencils. The Allreds respective pencils and colors compliment each other very well here.

While FF really doesn’t set up much besides the team this issue, it is still an enjoyable read with nice dialogue and art. Although the story itself may have been suited as a back up feature rather than a full comic. If you have followed FF pick this up, but newcomers are also welcome as well.

“The Allred’s compliment each other…” Two of the first three words in this sentence are not spelled correctly. C’mon. Unleash the dictionary!
