While attending this year’s Amazing Arizona Comic Con I was able to sit down with scribe Eric M. Esquivel and discuss his future and a bit of his past endeavors!

UTF: Let me start with the big question: What are you up to in 2014?

Loki Ragnarok and Role 1_CEric M. Esquivel: After Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ, Boom Studios liked that book a lot and they hired me to do a title called Loki: Ragnarock and Roll. It’s Loki joining a metal band and accruing worshipers on earth and becoming the most powerful god of all time.

UTF: That sounds great. Any other projects lined up in 2014?

Loki Ragnarok and Role SampleEric M. Esquivel: Yeah so the Loki book comes out February 19. It’s a 4-issue mini-series. That’s going to be a lot of fun. I also just finished Dark Queen through Zenescope Entertainment, which was a one-shot, and I have also taken over a book over there. It’s not announced yet. I am doing a little run which will be cool and a couple of Monkey Brain anthologies too. One in October and one in December, so keep your eye out.

UTF: It sounds like a great year for you, but let me ask the basics. How did you get started in the comic industry?

GFT Dark QueenEric M. Esquivel: I started self-publishing when I was about 15, and I made the books that I wanted to read as a fan, the comics that weren’t out there yet that I was looking for. I handed those off to editors at every company that I enjoyed and miraculously got some work that way. It took about a decade for me to get into mainstream comics, but I’m here now, and I live in L.A. and it’s my only job and it’s a lot of fun.

UTF: So if you were to give advice to anyone who’s trying to get into the industry, our fellow fanboys and fangirls who are just chomping at the bits, what would you say to them?

Thor, Unkillable Thunder ChristEric M. Esquivel: Before I quit my day job, I was making comics at night and I had a day job during the day, obviously. That’s when you have those things. I had a lot of fun doing that, and I thought it would be better afterwards. It’s not. it’s kind of the same. Just enjoy the work. Make comics not for the glory, not for the money, but because you can’t do anything else and that’s what you want to do with your life.

Also, relish that you have no editor and that you can be entirely who you are. You might be able to tell the best stories of your life right now before you break in, so just be aware of that. And if your fans want to find me, I am online at emecomics.com or my name on Twitter,

I want to take the time to thank Mr. Eric M. Esquivel for chatting with me. It was a pleasure, I did pick up a copy of Loki: Ragnarok and Roll #1, trust me guys this is a must own from this particular talent!

So what did you think of the interview my fellow fanboys and fangirls?
