Abe Sapien #3 Review

The conclusion to The Dark and Terrible has arrived. Does the B.P.R.D. spinoff continue to have the same level of quality and fun? While this issue didn’t quite feel like a ‘conclusion,’ it’s definitely a great comic.

Here’s the official description from Dark Horse:

A town cut off from the world by rampaging monsters must decide if the strange fishman in their midst signals salvation, or the end of days.

The last time we saw Abe he was witness to a priest going quite mad and becoming hypocritical to everything he believed in. I did enjoy that issue, it had a simple atmosphere that delved into panic. Now that’s how you set up a monster movie. This issue sees Abe taking a proactive role in attempting to calm the situation but ends up battling the mutated priest. If that last part sounds pretty awesome, you’re going to enjoy this comic.

The writing team of Mike Mignola and Scott Allie craft a violent atmosphere with an attempt hanging of the crazed priest, despite his wife’s pleas for them to stop. Then we have Abe saying this is crazy and to let him down. It’s good stuff and down to earth. Then the issue heads back into its signature monster mayhem with the priest transforming into a rather off-putting creature. It’s great stuff and leads into a fun and gruesome fight. The gruesome part comes in the form of the priest stabbing residents and officers. The priest’s dialogue is generic villain poetry of saying how humans will no longer be the dominant species and that he and the other monsters are the future. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before, but it works.

Sebastián Fiumara’s art gets to show the full extent of what it can do. The priest looks pretty gruesome, and the unwilling human mutations look appropriately sad. Abe is shown with some pretty good emotion. The action looks good and the perspective of the priest rampaging through the city was very cool to see. The main cover is pretty simple, but has the right atmosphere. (Yes, Abe gets ahold of a rifle within the comic.)

Overall, another very good installment starring everyone’s favorite Hellboy supporting character. The battle with the Priest is amazingly done, and is packed with some great art and storytelling. I am very eager to see where our protagonist goes from here.

4.5/5
