5-star Review: Quantum and Woody #1

Quantum and Woody is the long awaited new title to the Valiant Universe. This is a book with it’s tongue firmly planted in cheek but also tells a solid superhero team’s origin story…it’s just a little complicated.

Official description from VALIANT:

Writer James Asmus (Thief of Thieves, Gambit, The End Times of Bram & Ben) and artist Tom Fowler (Venom, Hulk: Season One) punt the world’s worst superhero team headfirst into the Valiant Universe! And the action-packed, zeitgeist-shredding exploitation stunt comic you demanded is here at last. (And, yes, there will be a goat too. Eventually.)

The first few pages of Quantum and Woody introduces this superhero team who obviously don’t have their skills finely tuned and have the public questioning their validity as actual superheroes. We then launch into a straight forward origin story. We are introduced to Eric and Woody Henderson, back in the day, two brothers who depend on and defend each other at all costs. Woody is adopted but a true brothers bond is born. Jump to today and the grown brothers are now estranged and headed in opposite directions. A tragedy brings them, begrudgingly, back to together and the event that turns them super powered ignites a new brotherly bond that bound to lead to nothing but trouble and a few laughs.

Writer James Asmus is bringing some fun and laughter to the Valiant Universe and I for one am hooked. The first issue as an origin story is fast paced, light-hearted and fun. These guys can’t be taken seriously but their shared task brought on by tragedy is no laughing matter. There’s bound to be plenty of action and mystery and Asmus plans on having a lot of fun along the way. Tom Fowler’s art is a perfect match for Asmus’ story-telling. It’s slightly cartoony and full of life and detail. You can’t help but get caught up in his style and finesse. Both Asmus and Fowler solidly grasp the concept of taking the material seriously but not taking themselves too seriously. It’s refreshing and the book is simply entertaining as hell.

Quantum and Woody is now on top of my must read list and should be on your’s as well. This title is a stunning mixture of fun, action and mystery. These two misfits just might make for the perfect superhero team and Quantum and Woody might just be the perfect superhero book. I’m buying what Asmus, Fowler and Valiant are selling and so should you!
