2000AD #1896 Review

2000AD 18962000AD #1896 offers the same lineup we’ve been use to the last couple of months. Inside this week’s offering we have Judge Dredd, Aquila, Brass Sun, Black Shuck and Jaegir. Let’s dive in.

First up, as always, is Judge Dredd. Michael Carrol builds on the last few issues and throws a curve ball and a very effective cliffhanger into the mix. It’s dialogue heavy, but it’s well written and will likely please any Dredd fans out there. Alongside this, Paul Marshall’s pencils, along with Gary Caldwell’s colors, do a great job at setting the scene.

This is followed by more Aquila. Gordon Rennie writes more of the same here – there’s a little bit of politics, some dialogue about gods and plenty of blood. Regular fans will enjoy it, but I’m finding the plot is moving very slowly and has more than enough padding to lengthen it out.

Thirdly, we have Brass Sun. With little dialogue and plenty of action, Ian Edginton offers a short but interesting read. It’s fluid, dynamic and has plenty of charm and character. Likewise, Inj Culbard’s art work is great to look at, but falls a little short in the fight sequences – sometimes a clear, blank sky is just too blank.

After comes the continuation of Black Shuck. Leah Moore and John Reppion continue to offer a story set in two time-frames, but at least the plot is generally progressing somewhat, even if there still isn’t anything major, aside from the titular character, linking the two. Still, combined with Steve Yeowell’s pencils and Chris Blythe’s colors, it’s not a bad read.

Finally, we round this issue off with more Jaegir. Gordon Rennie’s script is tense, dramatic and full of action. It has plenty of development, yet still ties into the wider setting and background. Overall, this is a strong issue for Jaegir and the art work from Simon Coleby – with Len O’Grady on colors – only enhances it.
