2000AD #1871 Review

2000ad-1871Few comics come out every week, but luckily we have 2000AD. This week, in 2000AD #1871, we have Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors, Tharg’s 3rillers, Terror Tales and Grey Area. A bit of a change in the lineup, so what’s the verdict?

First up is the usual slice of Judge Dredd. Micheal Carrol continues the action from last week and, while many will appreciate the play on modern themes, I find the semi-humorous references to modern culture annoying. It’s a decent story, but it could be better. Nonetheless, there is still hope and Nick Dyer offers some amazing art in the meantime.

Second is more ABC Warriors and Pat Mills ups the ante this week. This issue is action packed, dramatic and full of excitement. This is matched by the fluid dynamic art style of Clint Langley, adding some beautiful splashes of color into the fluid action pieces. ABC Warriors at its best!

Following this is a new Tharg’s 3rillers. David Baillie offers a simple concept and then dives into the world with a sense of mystery and surprise – a sure sign of expert story telling. Similarly, Jon Davis-Hunt portrays the bleak landscape but adds enough color and hues to make for an aesthetic read through. This is something to keep an eye on.

Next is Terror Tales and an interesting one-shot by Kek-W. The issue more or less wraps itself up quickly, but it’s a fun little romp that touches on an atmosphere similar to B-movies. Heck, there’s even an old mansion. This goes well with the black, white and eerie green artwork of PJ Holden. It’s not very deep, but it’s a quick and enjoyable read nonetheless.

Finally, we have the end of the current Grey Area arc. Dan Abnett provides plenty of action, but it feels somewhat shallow. The events here happen because they need to, or want to set-up future events. In short, the whole ‘alien currency’ aspect wears thin very quickly. At least Patrick Goddard’s artwork is always a joy to look at.
