2000AD #1870 Review

If you’re looking for action, 2000AD #1870 has a lot to offer. With Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors, Grey Area, Future Shocks and Strontium Dog inside, let’s take a closer look.

2000ad-1870First up is the usual weekly slice of Judge Dredd. There’s some dry humor from Michael Carroll this time, with the start of a new arc that gets back down to some detective/cop like roots. While it doesn’t have the big scale epicness of more recent stories, it’s nonetheless what Dredd is good at. Plus, Nick Dyer offers some moody, yet pleasing, artwork to help.

After this is more ABC Warriors. Pat Mills offers a script that starts off slow and tense but ends on a suspenseful, action-packed note. In between, there is plenty of character and dialogue that highlights some of the more political background of the series. Likewise, who can forget the sweet artwork of Clint Langley? ABC Warriors always please and this week is no exception.

Thirdly, we have part two in the current Grey Area arc. This week, Dan Abnett offers more exposition to last week’s cold opening. While the idea is interesting, the set-up for ‘chasing an alien around the base’ seems tried, tested and tedious. The scale may be upped a little, but there have been better examples of Grey Area recently. Visually, Patrick Goddard offers the usual treatment – there really isn’t too much to see here.

2000 AD #1870 also has a Future Shocks on offer, with Ed Robinson writing a one-shot with an interesting concept, yet slow set-up. The themes and ideas are unique enough to sustain interest, although it’s not the easiest story to get your head around. The artwork from John Burns adds a touch of old sci-fi artwork that suits the concept, while adding color and life.

Finally, we have more Strontium Dog. John Wagner brings things to a close here, with a satisfying resolution fitting of the gritty, grim, setting. The same goes for Carlos Ezquerra’s art style, which adds a classic touch and defines all the right moments. This will likely be one for the fans for these reasons.
