WiiU To Get Virtual Console And Downloadable Gamecube Games?

At 2pm GMT, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata will be hosting a new Nintendo Direct video. Speculation has hit the internet that this will be related to the announcement of the Virtual Console for the WiiU. The Virtual Console premiered on the original Wii and offered a chance to buy and download games from previous generations (NES – N64) and relive such classics and Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Kart.

No such service is available on the WiiU at the moment, but thanks to a NeoGAF user by the name of Aquamarine, we may have a hint that not only will the WiiU be getting a Virtual Console, but that it may feature Gamecube games! Gamecube games were something the Reggie Fils-Aime had said he would personally love to see on the store, so this could be legit.

Below is the source code of the Nintendo Direct UK site, where you can see highlighted the phrase “wiiu_virtualconsole: Virtual Console (WiiU)” :

This line of source code was not on the website on the January 12th, so having recently appeared around the time of a new Nintendo Direct, it’s fair to assume it’s related. If it is true and Gamecube games may be coming to the WiiU, what are some classics you’d like to see?

Of course Wind Waker is going to be high on everyone’s list, but what we really want to see,  more than anything, is the glory that is TIMESPLITTERS 2! Gimme a horde of flaming monkeys any day. Few games clocked up as many hours in my Gamecube as that gem, Smash Bros and Animal Crossing aside. This is great news, the Gamecube had some really interesting titles and I’m hoping we get the chance to revisit some of them.
