Why there won’t be a Final Fantasy VII remake any time soon…

Are you one of the millions who has played Final Fantasy VII?  I was too, and not that long ago Square Enix got my hopes up for a remake by releasing a movie, two prequel games, a sequel spin-off and later on a PlayStation 3 tech demo.

I thought in all honesty that a remake was at least in the works, but sadly that’s clearly not the case. CEO Yoichi Wada explained that if Square Enix attempted to remake this game right now it would be the end of the Final Fantasy franchise.

This position makes sense considering that Tetsuya Nomura recently said:

The new Final Fantasy must overcome the Final Fantasy of the past.

Now I’m opposed to this idea, because Final Fantasy VII had flaws, it wasn’t perfect.  I think it just got elevated to this high stature because for many fans this was the game that got them aquainted with the series in the first place.  And for even more gamers (myself included) this story served as an introduction to the RPG genre itself.

So what do you guys think?  Does this news surprise you?  Do you wish they were making a remake?  I guess we can at least be grateful that apparently the PC version is coming to Steam (for more information on that, click here).
