The WITCHER 3 Is Officially Heading Our Way!

CD Projekt RED have had huge critical and commercial success with their Witcher series, with both games in the series having sold over 4 million copies half way through last year. It’s no surprise then that in this month’s Game Informer, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been announced! Check out the cover below:

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, the games are long RPG’s set in a vivid, beautiful and meticulously detailed world that you can get lost in for hours. They have tight, fun and complex combat, branching story paths and are unafraid to deal with the darker themes. In short, if you’re an RPG fan or just a fan of great stories, you owe it to yourself to play these games.

Back to The Witcher 3, the game will be released in 2014 for PC and very interestingly on all “top of the line” consoles of the next generation. The Witcher 2 was the only game of the series to grace another console and that was in a great Xbox 360 port. The games have never appeared on the Playstation 3.

CD Projekt RED are aiming to make the game world 30 times bigger than that of The Witcher 2, making it bigger than Skyrim! In addition to this there will be sustained, free DLC after the launch of the game, similarly to how they supported The Witcher 2.

In terms of gameplay, it sounds like the story isn’t broken up into acts, the whole game world will be open to you from the offset. It’s not all open though, as the monsters wont scale to Geralt’s level, making certain territories essentially locked until you reach a certain level of progression, similar to Kingdoms of Amalur last year.

On top of this there will be tweaks to gameplay, making combat more fluid and less flamboyant. The team are working on animations to make the game feel as realistic as possible, as well as developing randomized and unpredictable weather systems in the game. Having announced a new game engine tailored to making “RPGs set in vast, open worlds with improved tools for spanning truly non-linear stories that are based on real player choices and consequences.” it sounds like a perfect match and hopefully the game will run smoothly.

Finally, each area in the game will have it’s own story line related to it but the non-linear fashion of the game supposedly will have an effect on whether you ignore the main story of Geralt’s quest for a lost lover in favor of these other branches. This dynamic system sounds very interesting. It’s refreshing to see a game willing to adapt to a player’s decisions but not pulling any punches. It looks like you’ll have to be prepared to make sacrifices for what you consider more important.

It’s always great to have a huge, deep RPG on the horizon and we cannot wait to get our hands on CD Projekt RED’s newest endeavour. Here are a last couple of images to wet the appetite.
