STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC Could See Up To 50 Million Users

After the recently announced news that Star Wars: The Old Republic was going free to play, there was a lot of talk bemoaning the death of subscription based MMO’s forever (unless your name begins with World and ends in Craft). However, famous industry analyst Michael Pachter claims that “the free-to-play option and lower retail price will combine to significantly increase the number of Star Wars players” due to the removal of the barrier of entry that is the monthly subscription.

The addition of a high value ‘Cartel Coin’ currency, used in-game to purchase cosmetic and premium items can be purchased through EA’s store and Pachter argues that the hugely increased fan base will result in enough people purchasing this currency to outweigh the loss of the subscription. He even went as far as to say the change could “attract at least 10 million MAUs [Monthly Active Users] indefinitely, with upside to perhaps 50 million.” That’s a huge jump from the slightly under 1 million subscribers they’re sitting at currently.

What do you guys think? Will you check it out? I know I always wanted to (being a huge Bioware fan), but I couldn’t justify the monthly price, so this is great news for me!
