New SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Toon Coming

Sonic the Hedgehog has had many cartoons over the years. One of the most fondly remembered is the one simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog, which was based off the Genesis games. Then we have the odd man out, in the form of Sonic Underground. (Yes there were singalongs in there,) The most recent one ended a good number of years ago, the famous and infamous Sonic X. I remember waking up Saturday mornings to check it out on the FoxBox. It was a show with potential, but was bogged down by the insanely annoying human character Chris and watered down game adaptations.

But anyways, let’s get on with this rather unexpected news. There’s a new cartoon coming starring the Blue Blur, titled ‘Sonic Boom‘ which is also the name of this catchy song from the franchise. Who’s writing episodes for it? Dave Poslsky, whom is known for his work on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. His ‘featured guest’s profile’ for Trotcon 2013 confirms this.

His credits range from features (Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2) to animation (South Park, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Sonic Boom, Class of 3000) to sitcoms (Pair of Kings) to late night (The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show) to daytime (The Donny and Marie Show) to sketch comedy (Frank TV, Cedric the Entertainer Presents). Add that to the fact that he got his start in game shows (Singled Out) and you have a textbook case of a) versatility or b) terrible career management… take your pick. Dave created and executive produced Disney’s The Buzz on Maggie, in addition to writing other pilots for Disney Channel, FOX, CBS, Castle Rock Entertainment, and Nickelodeon.

Details are scarce, but it apparently involves Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose and will *brace yourself’ lean toward being comedic in style. This was said by Poslsky in a Q&A over at Trotcon. No word on an air date or even what channel it’ll come on. It won’t be Cartoon Network or Nick I’m pretty sure, the most logical one would be The Hub. Now this raises some interesting points. SEGA appears to be trying to make Sonic ultra popular again, bringing him back to his prime with the upcoming release Sonic: Lost World, and with this cartoon it pretty much confirms the company is eager to bring him back into the spotlight after a two year hiatus. Now as for the actual show, there’s very little to go on so it’s not fair to judge. I’m not a fan of this ‘comedic approach.’ The Sonic games have some complex stories with the right amount of action and character development. Of course, SEGA, starting with SONIC COLORS, has gotten the hedgehog away from the ‘dark and serious’ spotlight and is making the games less with complex story and emphasis on the light tone and comedy. So I guess a tone like this for the show is expected. I’m slightly worried, but with Poslsky writing it, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. (After all, he’s written some of the best MLP episodes.)

More info on SONIC BOOM should hopefully come in soon. Who knows, if it airs on The Hub maybe we can finally get a Rainbow Dash/Sonic race.
