Young Justice: Invasion “The Fix” Review

As the Invasion arc in Young Justice continues, secrets are revealed, and yet more secrets are created. Can the show keep this up? There will be spoilers ~

In this episode, Artemis (Stephanie Lemelin), who is still under the alias of Tigress, intervenes before Psimon (Alan Tudyk) can infiltrate Aqualad’s (Khary Payton) mind; unfortunately, this ends up with Black Manta (also Khary Payton) ordering her to kidnap Miss Martian (Danica McKellar), so that the telepath can fix Aqualad’s fried brain. Deathstroke (Wentworth Miller) will be accompanying her. Meanwhile, Blue Beetle (Eric Lopez), who is desperate to gain control of the scarab, goes to the Green Beetle (Phil LaMarr) for help…

Aw, isn’t that sweet?

As usual, a lot is on the table here. Artemis, who is kinda the main character here (fans should be pleased) gets some time to shine and show some brain power. I sympathized for her; she is clearly stressed out here. She needs to somehow convince Miss Martian to save Aqualad, while pretending to kidnap her, and all the while, Miss Martian isn’t even sure if she can heal Aqualad!

Once again, I have mostly positive thngs to say about this episode. The action scenes are still well-animated (Deathstroke gets some of the most notably impressive scenes), and yet the show might be at it’s best during quiet, tense moments where the audience isn’t totally sure what will happen. We also get some funny scenes, such as when Green Beetle attempts to confirm his good will, only to end up creeping out the team.

Alas, I do have some gripes. For one, Nightwing (Jesse McCartney) finally decides to tell Superboy (Nolan North) and Lagoon Boy (Yuri Lowenthal) about his whole plan. It should be a big reveal, yet it just kinda…..happens. No fuss or anything. I do find Superboy’s reaction realistic, though.

Meanwhile, Miss Martian continues to be, arguably, the most annoying character in the show, to the point where she believes that some illusions are real. As a trained telepath, she should know better. Also, the Blue Beetle sub-plot, honestly, isn’t that interesting right now.

Still, those gripes aside, I honestly enjoyed this episode, and I am very interested to see where this show goes. Young Justice is easily the best superhero cartoon currently on the air. Cartoon Network would be wise to keep it.
