Winter is about to Heat Up! Funimation Announces More Simuldubs!

Funimation has certainly hit the ground running in 2015 and they’re showing no signs of slowing down! Yesterday, the Texas based anime company announced that they will be broadcasting “simuldubs” for most of their Winter 2015 titles. Yuri Kuma, World Break, The second half of Akatsuki no Yona, Tokyo Ghoul Root A, Rolling Girls, Death Parade, Assassination Classroom, Kamisama Kiss 2, Absolute Duo, and Maria the Virgin Witch have all been announced as receiving the simuldub treatment starting on the 18th of February with a two hour “primetime block” that will broadcast the first dubbed episodes of Death Parade, Assassination Classroom, and Tokyo Ghoul Root A (which admittedly is a bit weird since they have yet to dub the first season, but I digress).

Funimation will also broadcast a web show called “DubbleTalk” hosted by their marketing team, Justin Rojas and Lauren Moore along with Chad James from Screwattack, directly after the premieres via Funimation’s own website and Twitch.

They seem to be going full force with their simuldub plan which initially started with last year’s comedic hit Space Dandy before continuing the process  into last year’s Psycho Pass 2 and Laughing Under the Clouds.

I for one think the simuldub is a great idea. It gives fans who aren’t so hot on subtitles a chance to watch shows in English without having to wait for a physical release. These Broacast dubs also act as sort of a “rough draft”, allowing the actors, directors and writers to go back and change things around before the show gets a physical release, like a movie’s test screening. Lastly It also gives subscribers (like myself) more bang for their buck by offering more choices for them to watch, which in turn will bring more subscribers (Funimation also expanded their subscription network earlier this year by providing a “sub only” option at a much cheaper rate).

They also posted a release schedule for their other Broadcast Dubs:

  • The Rolling Girls on Saturdays at 12:58 p.m. starting February 21

  • World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman on Sundays at 11:05 a.m. starting February 22

  • Kamisama Kiss Season 2 on Mondays at 1:35 p.m. starting February 23

  • Absolute Duo on Mondays at 1 p.m. starting March 16

  • Yuri Kuma Arashi on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. starting March 16

  • Yona of the Dawn Season 2 on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. starting March 17

  • Maria the Virgin Witch on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. starting March 22

So what do you guys think? Is this a good idea?
