Spider-Man’s Officially Jewish. Matzo For Everyone!

We’ve often debated the Jew-ness of some of our favorite superheroes, and our resident Jewish Historian Jay Deitcher‘s dropped some truth bombs regarding the issue a time or two, but we’ve got our hands on a massive wisdom today.

According to Andrew Garfield, the second thespian to portray Spider-Man in the past ten years, Spider-Man is undoubtedly chosen. An un-gentile. Peter Parker’s Jewish ya’ll!

Check out what Andrew had to say:

“Spider-man is neurotic. Peter Parker is not a simple dude. He can’t just switch off,” Garfield told Time Out. “He never feels like he’s doing enough. And Peter suffers from self-doubt. He ums and ahs about his future because he’s neurotic. He’s Jewish. It’s a defining feature.”

Garfield, 30, making his second big-screen outing as Spider-Man, adds: “I hope Jewish people won’t mind the cliché, because my father’s Jewish. I have that in me for sure.” The actor says of Spidey: “He’s an over-thinker. It would be much easier if he was a life-saving robot.”

We’re all well aware that the early comic book pioneers were Jewish, but they often were forced to create gentile vigilantes as the United States was a teeny tiny bit insanely Anti-Semitic at the time. So Garfield’s assertion that Spider-Man’s a card carrying member of the Tribe isn’t so outlandish. Stan Lee is a giant Hebrew gentleman, so perhaps a Jewish Spider-Man was always his intention.

When you think about it, Catholic was the only other reasonable option, and Matt Murdock’s already got that faith on LOCK.
