SLEEPY HOLLOW “Root of All Evil” Review

This week is the state of Sleepy Hollow‘s second season strong or weak? Read on to find out.

The official description from Fox:

After a bank robbery turns violent, Abbie and Ichabod embark on a hunt for a mysterious silver coin that has more power than meets the eye. Meanwhile, Captain Frank Irving is put in a position where he must choose between his family and the greater good and the Mills’ sisterly bond is put to the utmost test in the all-new “Root of All Evil” episode of SLEEPY HOLLOW airing Monday, Oct. 6.

The single thing TV watchers need to understand about this show is that it follows the standard practices of a cop drama but with a supernatural twist. And in this latest outing that fact becomes more apparent as our two witnesses come face to face with a procedural case with a biblical twist. And true to form they butt heads with their city’s new frustrating Sheriff who could be an antagonist or an ally in the days to come.

The main plot of “Root of All Evil” centers around a coin that’s pushing people to let their inner most dark feelings result in some downright destructive bouts of betrayal. As always the spirit of the show and chemistry of the cast make it fun to watch, but the historical connection and the revelation of where the shekel came from felt a bit forced. Despite those minor annoyances the episode was immensely fun and even thrilling to watch.

Ichabod (Tom Mison) and Abbie (Nicole Beharie) have a strong partnership but there might be some issues the need to be addressed. Considering Crane‘s extended family where you have Henry (John Noble) working as the Horsemen of War while Katrina (Katia Winter) shacks up with Death can you really blame her? Whether you find those elements to be over the top or not these two actors succeed in selling them with every interaction. And when you have consistent secondaries to back them up, Lyndie Greenwood (Jenny Mills) and Orlando Jones (Frank Irving), the entire series enjoys a level of quality befitting it’s literary legacy.

Sleepy Hollow continues to be a thrilling adventure series with a distinct supernatural journey all its own. With solid performances and a few interesting developments “Root of All Evil” does enough right to garner attention and praise as it comes recommended.
