REVERSE THAT — Easter Eggs from THE FLASH Pilot

Three months before its TV debut, the pilot episode of CW’s The Flash was leaked online. I don’t know how it happened, but I do know it left me and a few hundred other fans with a lot to look forward to this fall season. The first episode sets up a lot of tidbits that not only help explain Barry Allen’s character but also set up the future of the DC Universe on the small (and possibly big) screen.

WARNING! SPOILERS ON THE RISE!

THE MIND OF BARRY ALLEN

CWTheFlash_CSI (800x453)

Not four minutes into the episode, we’re shown Barry Allen’s skills as a forensic investigator and his interactions with other cops, including his foster father Detective Joe West. This approach is interesting because viewers get to look at crime scenes the same way that Barry does. We have shows like NCIS and the hundred incarnations of CSI to show us how those type of cops operate, but they tend to focus less on their talents and more on their hi-tech equipment. I stated in a previous article that this particular type of story will attract fans of those shows and portray Barry as more of a crime-fighter than superhero.

IRIS HOOKS UP WITH PROFESSOR ZOOM

Next we see Barry’s interactions with Iris West, his foster sister and potential love interest in the series. As you know (and if not click here first), Barry is highly attracted to Iris, but she is totally clueless, seeing him as more of a brother than boyfriend. She doesn’t seem to have that problem with Eddie Thawne, who we’re 99.9% sure will eventually become Professor Zoom before the show ends. In fact, when Barry wakes up from his coma, he finds out that they’re in a secret relationship! A unique love triangle for Barry? Yes. A possible plot by Professor Zoom to hurt The Flash? Maybe…

GORILLA GRODD

While Dr. Wells explains to Barry about what happened with his particle accelerator, we get a glimpse at that some sort of creature named Grodd was living there but busted out of its cage. Flash fans will already know what that means and future fans will be excited when they find out what that means. If you’re a plan of the Planet of the Apes series, you might be in for a treat.

SUPERHERO BLOGGER

It’s revealed by Eddie Thawne that Barry has his own blog. Apparently Barry develops his own ‘Wall of Weird’ like Chloe Sullivan from Smallville, albeit a digital one with weird cases and happenings in Central City. I can already tell that this will be used a lot to introduce the audience to a number of characters throughout the season. The only thing that might be faster than The Flash is the internet!

BIRTH OF THE METAHUMANS

We also learn that the particle accelerator that gave Barry his powers pretty much creates most, if not all, of the metahumans around. This is a much more simplified explanation for their existence than what happens in the comics. Trust me, it involves White Martians screwing with our DNA millions of years ago. This Static Shock influenced origin saves fanboys a lot of time from explaining metahumans to everyone else.

MAN ON THE INSIDE

Told ya so….

Before the end of the episode, Detective West finds out about Barry being The Flash and that the impossible does actually exist. After apologizing to him for doubting about what happened to his mother, he immediately tells Barry him to keep his powers a secret from Iris, coming off a little too much like the final scenes from The Amazing Spider-Man, but oh well…

A CRISIS IS COMING

At the very end of the episode, a heap of spoilers are thrown at us. First off, the paraplegic Dr. Wells isn’t paraplegic at all! He gets up out of his wheelchair and looks at a newspaper clipping…from the future! The newspaper shows that Barry is still The Flash 10 years from now and wearing a costume that resembles his comic book look more. Also, it shows that Oliver somehow regains the company he lost in season two of Arrow and has a merger with WayneTech, which is owned by Bruce Wayne, aka the goddamned Batman! But the biggest shocker is that The Flash goes missing in the midst of a crisis. If you’re a fan of DC Comics, you know that the word ‘crisis’ has a special meaning. Could we have a few Infinite Earths-themed episodes? I sure hope so!
