Have you seen Joseph Kahn’s Power Rangers fan short? You know the dark one with James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff. If you haven’t you should check it out soon, because SCG Power Rangers LLC is demanding the video be taken down. Kahn who previously directed Torque and Detention has no desire to direct anything short of a heavy R Rated Power Rangers stating, “The irony here is that I wouldn’t even want to make “Power Rangers: The Movie’ for real. Like if I had to make a ‘Power Rangers’ movie, this is it. It’s 14 minutes long and it’s violent and this is what I have in me. If they offered me the 200 million version, the PG-13 version, I literally wouldn’t do it. It’s just not interesting to me.”
I was never a Power Rangers fan but this short is pretty damn cool. Not because of the violence and profanity, but it addresses a key idea from the original series. What kind of monster would recruit children to become soldiers to fight in an intergalactic war. It’s this concept running through the video that justifies the darker edger. What would happen to kids trained in this manner?
