Agent Carter might soon be kicking some ass for new Marvel TV adventures. According to British tabloid The Mirror, Haley Atwell will be starring in a new show revolving around Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger. The show is expected to take place after the Agent Carter One-Shot from the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray, which had her joining Howard Stark in forming S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end of the story. Carter also finished filming several weeks ago on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and was seen wearing old woman make-up. I guess it’s safe to say she won’t get killed in the show.
Marvel is also sparing no expense on the series. According to the Mirror, it will be Marvel’s major project of 2014 and will be a big budget production. Back in September when the rumor was still beginning to circulate, Atwell expressed her enthusiasm to Digital Spy on reprising the role.
I think Marvel probably take that very seriously, and it’s certainly something I would be a part of doing. I’d be interested to show different sides of Peggy. Although she’s kick-ass, and she can be aggressive and she can be just as competent as the men, it’d be nice to show that she’s a feminist in a way. It’s not just about her being aggressive and as aggressive as the men in those action sequences, but being able to be a little bit more rounded as a person.
Still, until Marvel or ABC announce it, nothing’s confirmed yet. Plus, The Mirror says that Atwell will be moving to Los Angeles for six months to film the show. Now, considering the lukewarm response that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has gotten since it premiered in September, you’d think that for Agent Carter they would at least film a pilot before committing to at least 13 episodes. In other words, playing it safe and not overhyping this thing before it begins.
Unlike Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which I was only mildly curious about when it started airing, I’d really like an Agent Carter TV series to work out, so I hope they tread carefully with this. I joked about this when the rumor first got out, but it might help if Agent Carter aired on the same night as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or at least stay on ABC, and that’s assuming of course that AOS makes it to season 2. Who knows, maybe the two of them could support each other somehow. You’ve got one show that covers the S.H.I.E.L.D. exploits in the present day and another show that follows their adventures in the ’40s and ’50s. Past and present back-to-back.
Either way, I’ve been disappointed with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so far, so if Agent Carter moves forward, get the right people behind it, and make sure established Marvel characters play important roles in the story. I want the Howling Commandos, dammit!
