My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic ‘Maud Pie’ Review

This episode of My Little Pony many, myself included, were very intrigued by. While family of the Mane 6 has been explored, it also has been very little explored. (Fluttershy’s parents anyone?) Pinkie Pie as seen in the episode ‘The Cutie Mark Chronicles‘ has a very interesting history. That’s really the only time we’ve seen her family. After last week’s less than stellar episode, I think we were all ready for something really great. ‘Maud Pie‘ is a pretty unique episode, very enjoyable with the title character being very intriguing.

Here’s the official episode description from The Hub:

Pinkie Pie’s sister, Maud, comes to Ponyville for a visit and Pinkie Pie is hoping that her friends will love hanging out with her. But the other ponies find it difficult to be friends with Maud due to her bland personality.

Last week’s episode saw the debut of Scott Sonneborn. This one also has a new writer, in the form of Noelle Benvenuti. You can call this a Pinkie Pie episode I suppose, and writing her will always prove to be a tricky endeavor. Thankfully, Noelle writes her well for the most part. I do think however Pinkie was perhaps oblivious to the way Maud was with her friends. I would think she would have warned them beforehand that Maud was a bit different. But anyways, the true star of the show is the title character. Maud Pie is the complete opposite of Pinkie. She’s un-emotional and at first to the older viewer appears to be rather depressed.  Seeing her interact with the rest of the Mane 6 was pretty priceless. Here we have 5 extremely friendly ponies and an anti-social one that likes rocks.  On her ‘pet’ rock, one of my favorite lines was when Fluttershy said, “On the Bright side, Boulder seemed really sweet,” then Rainbow Dash shouted, “HE’S A ROCK!

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, some people just don’t click. Not everyone will become good friends. It’s a different kind of message, almost saddening. But true nonetheless. So while the ponies and Maud never really became close friends, their love for Pinkie Pie makes them all bond anyway. The sisterly love displayed between Pinkie and Maud was really great and genuine. Despite being polar opposites, they have such a great bond. Some of the funniest scenes was when Maud visited each of the Mane 6 one on one and how they tried to be friendly. (The rock poem and Twilight’s reaction was great.)

Overall, ‘Maud Pie‘ was great. She and Pinkie Pie really have a nice bond, hopefully we’ll see them together again at some point. This is also one of the funnier ones of the season, I haven’t found myself laughing out loud like this in awhile. What we have is definitely one of the more memorable episodes of Season 4 yet.
