Lawrence Kasdan And Simon Kinberg To Write STAR WARS Spin-Off’s Instead

A few days ago news broke that Disney had hired Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: Days of Future Past) to pen Episode VIII and IX of the new Sequel Trilogy respectively – following on from Michael Arndt’s Episode VII – although sources are now telling THR that while the writers ARE working on resurrecting the Star Wars mythos, the projects they’re developing won’t be a part of the actual sequels themselves, but rather spin-offs.

We had heard previously that Disney hoped to make the new Star Wars movies akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now we know that to be the case. The studio hope to release a new movie every “two to three years,” and will also develop spin-off’s focusing on side characters here and there (Boba Fett anyone!?).

“Their scripts could turn into official “Episodes” in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie “every two to three years,” and some could easily focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos (similar to Marvel’s Avengers universe). Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment.”
