Jason Mamoa Is Aquaman. One of the Only Actors to Quarrel with Marvel and Thrive!

Jason Mamoa is Aquaman in Batman vs Superman. Not only that, the mighty Dothraki Khal will return in 2017’s Justice League Movie as one of the cornerstone members. Pretty awesome stuff for an actor who’s hit rock bottom.

Well, that’s not exactly true, but he hasn’t really leveraged the height of his stardom for anything meaningful. Until now.

Jason Mamoa reached peak popularity during his stint on Game of Thrones. He soon used that Fantasy weight to resurrect the Conan franchise in a 2011 reboot. A fun enough flick for my easy to satisfy fanboy mind, but an absolute bomb to critics and the box office. Soon enough he was in the running for a starring role as Drax in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but he famously priced himself out of the role.

He could still be a Gargoyle, too

He could still be a Gargoyle, too

I remember that month long drama pretty vividly (as vividly as a dude behind a computer with no direct dealings in the hiring process at all can recall an event). All of the geeky news scribes derided Jason Mamoa for making a pretty heinous mistake. I was right there with them. After all, Mamoa was never a real draw for anything. He was a big, cool, nice, handsome dude… but not a fantastic actor. His star had already risen and fallen with that failed Conan flick, so what the hell was he doing!!! Why wouldn’t he CLING to a Marvel movie for dear life.

Well, dude made the right choice. He’s just secured a role as one of the founding members of the Justice League, a role comparable to Chris Hemworth’s Thor or Chris Evans Captain America. He went from being a minor muscle character in Marvel’s B-Team Guardians of the Galaxy to a character with equal screentime as Ben Affleck’s Batman or Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Well done, Mamoa!!! You deserve it.
