Is a RAMBO TV Series In the Works?

Hollywood has a habit of turning highly successful films into television shows. Whether it’s an animated series of a live action drama, movies are rarely safe from having a small screen counterpart. The latest film rumored to have a TV series is Rambo.

For those not familiar with the character who is arguably Sylvester Stallone’s most famous role, the film series is centered around John Rambo, a troubled Vietnam War veteran and former Green Beret who is skilled in many aspects of survival, weaponry, hand to hand combat and guerrilla warfare. He often uses these skills to protect less skilled (or less awesome) individuals from overwhelming odds. To date, there are four films, the latest one released in 2008 (simply titled Rambo).

Stallone has teased that there would be a fifth film where he would unofficially pass the torch to a new lead character (similar to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), but now it appears that it might continue on the small screen instead. Entertainment One (eOne) and Nu Image are said to be developing a TV series iteration of Rambo, and Stallone is currently in negotiations to be involved with the project “on a creative level.” In addition, Stallone might potentially star in the show in a reprisal of his Rambo role. If he does, the show could potentially be a prequel of sorts to the film series with Stallone’s character having flashbacks. With Hollywood’s love of prequels (everything from The Exorcist to Dumb and Dumber has one or two), this theory is highly plausible.

Producers will soon be shopping the potential series to US and international broadcasters, with eOne TV CEO John Morayniss saying,

Rambo fans cover all demographics and we’re confident that we’ll quickly find this series a home.”

Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn to be another fiasco like the Beverly Hills Cop TV series. I’m still a bit upset about that.
