First Sketch for BAG END… Who’ll Help Me Build It?

I think most people are united in their secret desire to runaway and live in a Hobbit Hole. There’s something about that comfy little oaken home, with its 2 pantries filled to the brim with charcuterie, the 136 bottle wine cellar, and a spacious smoking room, that makes even the most modern of men yearn for the simpler days.

Oh, and there’s no work. Hobbits never work. They mostly drink and frolic about, which is a tempting thought to all of we desk slaves.

As I was wandering the alleys and byways of the interwebs this morning, I came across Lord of the Rings concept artist John Howe’s first sketch of Bilbo’s cherished Bag End. This run through was just a playful drawing, according to the illustrator:

“The floor-plan was a pure extravagance on my part – totally useless! But, you see, I wondered where Bilbo’s bathroom was! I mean you never really visit the bathrooms in films unless someone gets murdered or stabbed, and I was thinking, ‘Well, where would it be, and how would it be set up, and where would the cellar be, and where would the sneaky Hobbity way out the back be, the secret passage to use in case you didn’t want to go out the front door?’

The final film version isn’t actually that far off.

Alright, this is the plan… We just need a nice plot of land, a few “re-homed” tons of lumber, and enough food & wine to supply a halfling army, and we’ll be set! Who’s with me!?!?!?
