DOCTOR WHO’s Matt Smith To Star in AMERICAN PSYCHO Musical

Even though Matt Smith finished his final day of filming Doctor Who only a couple days ago, he already has another gig lined up. Starting this winter, Smith will play notorious serial killer Patrick Bateman in a musical adaptation of the 1991 novel “American Psycho.” Previously adapted in a 2000 movie starring Christian Bale, Smith will appear as Bateman at London’s Alameda Theater from December 3 to January 2014.

According to BBC News, the show sold out within hours of the casting announcement. Smith himself commented on his excitement for the role.

The opportunity to work with Rupert Goold, a director of great vision and flair, combined with the brilliant story and music, seemed like such a cool challenge

Smith is most well-known for his role as the Eleventh Doctor on “Doctor Who.” He will appear alongside 10th Doctor David Tennant in November’s 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor,” and will regenerate in the 2013 Christmas Special. Peter Capaldi will take over as the Twelfth Doctor.

This was a very unusual career choice for Smith, but it’s also pretty smart. Actors don’t want to be typecast, so I like that Smith chose a role that many would likely not have associated him with. Still, Smith has a lot to live up to considering how well Bale played the role in 2000, but I think he’ll do fine.

I just hope that if his performance is reviewed negatively, he doesn’t go on his own murderous rampage. We don’t want life to imitate art in this instance.
