CinemaCon News Round-Up: Prometheus, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes 2, Daredevil And More!

Okay, you may have noticed that here at UTF we haven’t covered all the news that came out of CinemaCon. Well, that’s because there’s so bloody much we figured we’d wait until it ended to put it all in a round-up article. Here you’ll find news about The Amazing Spider-Man, Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2, Fantastic Four and more!

NEW MUTANTS

You may be wondering why the hell this is a headline. Well, 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman hinted that they were beginning to form the basis of a New Mutants movie. Calm down fanboys, it’s still a long way off. Read his quotes below:

Collider: When can fans expect an announcement on some of these other properties? Before Comic-Con, after Comic-Con, at Comic-Con?

Rothman: In the summer.

Collider: Are you talking to filmmakers right now?

Rothman: Let me just say this. All I have to say is, I agree with you in your assessment of the potential in a lot of these [Marvel] characters.

Yeah yeah, he didn’t confirm it there but Collider report in the article that he did indeed say it. Beats me.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES 2

After presenting footage for Taken 2 and Neighbourhood Watch at 20th Century Fox’s panel at CinemaCon, CEO Tom Rothman hinted that production may be soon to begin on a sequel to the critical and commercial success that was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, potentially for a summer 2013 release. But the problem with this is, how can Andy Serkis fit this in? Currently, he’s filming The Hobbit until June, and Coming Soon think that Fox will want to schedule it as their third summer movie that year, but that would mean a filming start date of around June/July and I’m not sure whether a script is even in place yet. On the other hand, the movie could open in either Autumn or Winter (as their slate is pretty empty there) but would Fox risk losing potential profit? In other news, they also debuted the list of movies that are scheduled to begin production this year, and that list included The Wolverine.

PROMETHEUS

Speaking to MTV, Tom Rothman (this guy says a lot doesn’t he?) re-assured horror and Prometheus fans that not a single frame of the movie would be cut in order to retain a rating that is honest to Alien. He wasn’t joking either, the movie has been rated 15 here in the UK.

FANTASTIC FOUR

Okay, I’m sorry every bit of news here has featured Tom Rothman. I promise this will be the last one. Speaking to Collider, Rothman revealed that the previous rumors of Chronicle director Josh Trank directing a reboot of Fantastic Four were true, but at the minute it is unknown whether he is directing (he’s definately working on it though).

“Josh Trank who did Chronicle, I think this has been reported, is gonna come on and work on a take, or a vision, that he has for it, so we’re very excited about that.”

“Well, I think there’s a possibility of [him directing].  I mean he’s gonna develop it now, and then it depends on the script.”

DAREDEVIL

Okay, I lied. Rothman has also given a relatively small update on Daredevil (currently being directed by David Slade), saying that “it’s in development; we’re working on the script.” The thing is, he’s partially lying. Based on some recent tweets from Slade, it seems that no progress has currently been made on the project and that he’s looking for inspiration. Along with that, there’s a rumor going around that Fox execs hate the script for Daredevil and are seeking a new writer. Brad Caleb Kane was supposed to be writing the script, but of course it was so terrible the spot is open for any budding writer with an interest in Daredevil.
