ADVANCE REVIEW! Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood #1

Do these players that have had most of their adventures take place in another realm deserve really their own title? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The most badass archer in comics is back in a brand new ongoing series! From drug lords to corrupt bankers to the things that go bump in the night, no evils that plague the streets will be safe when Robyn Locksley sets up shop as a private detective in New York City.

While Robyn settles into her new life, the Cabal, a collective of mysterious and powerful individuals, sets their sights on bringing down the hooded heroine, who will face the biggest threat of her life.

GFT Robyn Hood 1_Preview PageI’m going to freely admit that I’ve been a fan of this character since her mini-series debut, and as this emerald archer takes on a monthly book the creative team proves her worth with each passing page. In other words: this is exactly the type of action oriented and female driven narrative that more than deserves a spot on your pull-list.

Pat Shand continues to demonstrate his literary prowess as he moves this icon to Earth. The transition is actually more smooth than I anticipated, as both Robyn Hood and Maid Marian search for a purpose within their redefined existence. They went through a lot during their time in Myst but now they’re private investigators caught in a web of magic with a newly minted threat that’s targeting a peaceful coven. All that added together might seem a bit much but the author makes the whole thing flow thanks to competent dialogue and an atmosphere that invites new and already dedicated readers.

The visuals handed in by Larry Watts pop with enthusiasm, as every single pencil stroke gives just enough structure and detail without overwhelming the senses. The talent at this point knows exactly how to draw these endlessly engrossing players without falling to a low of over exploitation. There are some minor instances where they seemed a bit too stiff but when you add in the colors by Slamet Mujiono the entire visual component crackles with charisma and supports the work of its written word.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood #1 is a high caliber start that deserves to find an audience. Whether you’ve been following her stories since her first mini-series or not this monthly is a rock solid jump-on point. Recommended.
