Ah, Dungeons and Dragons. Many nerds have fond memories of playing the famous board game in their basements whilst sipping a nice cold glass of milk and sharing a tray of brownies (which doesn’t sound half-bad), prompting the franchise to be associated with the traditional stereotype of nerd-dom, although in recent years that’s been shaken off as geeks have inherited the Earth. That doesn’t mean the property has a better reputation though; it’s constantly viewed as one of those “classic nerd” things that if you go anywhere near then you develop some kind of contagious creep disease. That reputation better heal fast, as Warner Bros has announced that they’re shoving a reboot into development.

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Greg Silverman (WB studio guy). “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

“This settlement accomplished our overarching goal of unifying all ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ rights under Hasbro’s control, paving the way to make a blockbuster film,” said a pair of Hasbro lawyers. “It’s a great outcome for all involved – especially ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ fans who will now get to see D&D on the big screen.”

The announcement comes after the legal issues surrounding the franchise have been resolved. Previously, it was a bit of a mess as to who owned the big-screen rights: Warner Bros, Hasbro or production company Sweetpea Entertainment. Fortunately everything’s all hunky-dory now and the studios can get back to cashing in on famous properties in order to get the big bucks. The movie already has a script too, written by David Leslie Johnson, who also wrote that great movie Wrath of the Titans.

You may remember that there’s already been a Dungeons and Dragons movie released in 2000, however that was abhorrent and everybody has since attempted to wipe it from memory. Even though I would say that I’m a very nerdy nerd, I don’t know anything about this franchise except it’s a high fantasy board game. In a post-Lord of the Rings world the movie will probably have a much easier job of finding its footing and should do quite well for the studio. Next year’s Warcraft will be the true test on whether there’s an audience for niche epic fantasy properties.

Dungeons and Dragons will be out… sometime. Probably before 2020.
