Vaughn Signs on to Direct First Class Sequel!

Even though X-Men First Class was the most critically acclaimed of the mutant series, the folks at Fox seemed a little uncommitted whenever asked about the possibility of a sequel. Well, today it was announced that they’ve officially re-signed Matthew Vaughn to direct the second one, so it’s full steam ahead! Among the returning crew is the series’ previous director Bryan Singer in the role of producer, who’ll be joined by screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

While no other details regarding the X-Men sequel have been released, I’m sure the film will stay in the ‘period piece’ format. While making the press rounds last summer, Matthew Vaughn actually revealed how he’d like to begin the second movie. Many thanks to HitFlix for the interview snippets.

I’ve got some ideas for the opening for the next film. I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he’s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world and mutants weren’t even mentioned. And we could go from there, and I’ve got some fun ideas about what other mutants to bring in. I don’t want to tempt fate, though. If the film’s a hit, of course I’d be interested. I really enjoyed making it

That has some serious potential, but it does seem pretty bizarre. I, for one, have all the confidence in the world that Singer and Vaughn will create a great First Class sequel, what about you?
