They got all the main heroes cast, all that was left was to line up the title villain. Variety is reporting that Toby Kebbell (Wrath of the Titans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) has been offered the role of Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom, in The Fantastic Four. If he accepts, Kebbell will face off against Miles Teller (Mister Fantastic), Jamie Bell (The Thing), Kate Mara (Invisible Woman) and Michael B. Jordan (The Human Torch).
Kebell beat out actors like Jack Huston and Dohnall Gleeson for the role. Shooting for the reboot is expected to begin in the spring, with a release date of June 19, 2015 planned. No other details about the film have been revealed, but it’s already getting a sequel that will be released on July 14, 2017.
This Fantastic Four reboot, like the Amazing Spider-Man series, is taking inspiration from the Ultimate continuity of Marvel, where the main characters are younger. Clearly they went that direction with Kebbell, as well as the other stars. I haven’t seen any of Kebbell’s work, so I can’t comment on his acting abilities. There’s no denying that the casting choices for this film have been…unusual, to put it lightly (or unacceptable if you ask some fans). However, considering some of the weird rumors we’ve been hearing specifically about Doctor Doom (the weirdest being that his character would be changed to a woman), Kebbell’s casting is relatively normal.
Still, they better not make the same mistake they did with the last FF film series, which was showing Doom’s face for WAY too long. Pre-scarring? Sure, flash his mug all over the place, but once he gets in that accident, that mask better stay on the whole time. Thus sayeth me!
