The Dark Knight Rises: Trailer 4 Analysis

”Batman, meet fist. Fist, meet Batman.”

Warner Bros. must be eager to impress us. Yesterday, a fourth full-length trailer for trilogy-closer The Dark Knight Rises found its way online, and with it, a whole bunch of new footage was revealed, including the reveal of a plot point from comic-book arc Knightfall. So, to celebrate the release of yet another breathtakingly awesome trailer, I’m putting the fourth and presumably final trailer for TDKR under my virtual microscope…

Batman’s coming home…

An extended look of a scene between a Gotham citizen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s 100% definitely a beat cop John Blake that we saw some of in Trailer 3 opens the trailer after an action montage. It looks like some of Gotham’s citizens have kept their faith in Batman during the eight-year time gap between The Dark Knight and TDKR… (Well of course they have. He’s Batman. Wouldn’t you keep your faith in Batman?)

I predict a riot

Apologies for the slight blurriness of this one, but as you’ve probably gathered, it depicts what looks like the start of a riot in a posh hotel that we’ve been seeing glimpses of since Trailer 2 (there’s also a few new bits of footage of that particular scene here). It’s not known if the army heading towards the hotel are Bane’s troops, but (a there’s an awful lot of them and (b they’re wearing plain clothes, so they’re most likely severely pissed off Gotham citizens seeking to cause a fair bit of havoc. The fact that it’s a posh hotel (you can tell because the men outside are wearing suits) ties nicely into the ‘poor against the rich’ theme of TDKR.

From behind bars

This shot likely takes place pretty early on in the film. As you can most likely tell, Bruce Wayne’s back in the same place that we first saw the ‘adult’ Bruce in in Batman Begins: a prison, with copious amounts of facial hair. It’s not known how Bruce ends up holed up (excuse the crap pun, but literally holed up – Bruce is at the bottom of a rather deep hole. Nope, I’m not talking metaphorically – ah, forget it) in the prison, but I’d be willing to bet that Bane and the League of Shadows are behind Bruce’s capture. The prison’s also where Bruce’ll most likely be for the eight year time gap.

From in front of bars

Oh dear, Batman’s in trouble. This shot, which possibly takes place in a prison, shows the beginning of what looks to be a massive smackdown between Batman and Bane. From the look on Batman’s face, you can tell he knows who’s behind him… Oh, in case you didn’t know, Bane’s behind him, and he’s in the mood for breaking things. What, exactly? I think you know exactly by now what Bane wants to break…

Breaking the Bat

…Oh, it’s Batman, by the way. This shot’s pretty much proof that Bane will break Batman in the prison, as he’s shown beating the living crap out of Batman in several different shots, followed by the familiar shot of Bane dropping Batman’s cowl. Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that Bane says ‘Mister Wayne…’ as he strolls towards Batman. Uh oh, Batman, someone’s found out your secret identity…

The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas on July 20.
