The Avengers Box Office Update; IMAX Sells Out Of Seats For The Movie

It’s now a fact: The Avengers is a box office monster. Deadline has confirmation that the superhero team-up of a lifetime had a sunday gross of $55m, making it’s opening weekend gross $205m and giving it a worldwide gross of $650m, racing past Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows previous record of $169m.

In other news, Deadline has also reported that IMAX sold out of seats for screenings of The Avengers over the weekend in North America, and had to turn some people away. This news, along with the box office update confirm what we’ve always wanted to hear: The Avengers is an actual contender to enter the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, and could possible beat Titanic’s gross if it’s domination continues (and the movie isn’t released in Japan until August, where movies like this do particurally well). It’s next opponent is Prometheus (which isn’t out in the UK until June 1 and a week later in the US) although Men in Black III could be a movie that will knock Avengers off the #1 spot on the box office chart. Remember, Will Smith is huge. The Pursuit of Happyness (a movie starring Will Smith that would have normally madea maximum of $100m) made $307,077,300 worldwide on a budget of $55m. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if MIB3 actually turned out to be a hit.
