STAR TREK writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have their greedy little eyes set on the Universal Monster universe. The duo plans to reboot the various franchises, which include Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy, Frankenstein, and an entire litany of spin-off characters. Speaking on for the pair of them, Orci had this to say:

“There’s an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. Van Helsing, and we’re also producing The Mummy for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It’s not going to be just a remake.”

I know they’re already knee deep in The Mummy universe with their latest reboot, but I have one tiny, teeny, itty bitty favor to ask in regards to the Universal Monsters.

Please, Please, PLEASE.. bring back Brendan Fraser as the main protagonist. I don’t know why (or how) he created such an iconic performance as Rick O’Connell, but the franchise was pretty damn awesome. Ignoring the third flick Tomb of The Dragon Emperor, of course, the quality of which I blame on Rachel Weisz, who abstained from the project for fear that such an iconic role would eclipse her other performances. Which may be an accurate fear, considering this little Fraser-centric ‘fanboy fit’ we’ve all witnessed.

Nevertheless, the blame’s on Weisz. Let’s move on.
