Scarlet Witch’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Costume Sounds Like Little Red Riding Hood

Ooooh, we got our hands on some Avengers: Age of Ultron news. Elizabeth Olsen, the lovely lady cast as Scarlet Witch, has let loose with some comments on her costume. While she’s wisely vague on the specifics, her brief description definitely sounds different than the classic Scarlet Witch garb.

Check out what the starlett had to say:

“We’ve done some costume stuff, yeah! My favourite piece is my secrecy cloak that prevents anyone from seeing what I’m wearing. There’s a hood, and a robe – it protects the image! I don’t think Joss ever would have hired me, honestly, if he wanted me to wear those outfits; I am not a professional athlete and nor am I a model. Wearing those costumes wouldn’t be fun for anyone who wasn’t those things. He already had a different idea. It respects and involves the comic-book character but it’s different, more rooted. It’s for someone today. Well, if someone walked around wearing what she wore in the comics, people would stop and say, ‘What the hell… she thinks she’s a superhero!’”

Ultimate Costume

Hmmm… so it’s definitely not like the original, cleavage bearing costume in the comics. Nor is it similar to the Euro-rave, red leather costume used in the Ultimate Comics. Which is really… awesome! I absolutely abhor overly faithful superhero costumes on the big screen. That’s why Captain America’s silly Avenger costume really rubbed me the wrong way, but I absolutely loved the First Avenger costume. Joss Whedon should capture the thematic threads that inform viewers that “This! This woman is the Scarlet Witch”, without relying too heavily on the cheesy original suits.

As Olsen describes the threads, it actually sounds like those awesome modern revisionist versions of Little Red Riding Hood. You know, those photographs you saw ciculating the web during the release of Amanda Seyfried’s creatively titled Red Riding Hood. Stuff like this…
