Roberto Orci And X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Writers Board POWER RANGERS Film

The live-action Power Rangers film is morphing into action by recruiting a creative team with attitude. X-Men: First Class screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz will write the script for the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers adaptation. Miller and Stentz have also worked on Thor, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and are currently writing the script for Star Trek 3.

They will also be teaming up with their former Fringe producer and (supposed) Star Trek 3 director Roberto Orci. Orci will serve as an executive producer for Power Rangers and help develop the story with Miller and Stentz. This isn’t surprising at all. Considering that this is the guy who wrote Star Trek Into Darkness and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, he’d obviously want in on a movie featuring giant robots fighting alien monsters. It’s so predictable. The only person who’s a better fit for Power Rangers is Guillermo del Toro.

With a Power Rangers movie, it’s expected that there will be a lot of bombastic action. That being said, I don’t want this film turning out like the Transformers movies, i.e. all explosions and no substance. I understand that many enjoy that guilty pleasure, but Power Rangers needs to be more than that. Despite many of us looking at Power Rangers through nostalgia-tinted glasses, there really isn’t that much substance to the original series. If they’re truly trying to “re-envision” the Power Rangers, they’ll give us a good story AND a lot of cool action sequences. That’s the Power Rangers reboot we deserve!

Or we could just get another explosion frenzy. It doesn’t seem to be doing Transformers: Age of Extinction any harm, critical reception be damned.
