Prepare for Blue Balls Fanboys and Fangirls: THANOS Isn’t The Main Villain in Avengers 2?

After witnessing Joss Whedon’s glorious superhero team-up in 2012’s THE AVENGERS (even though I still have a few heated words of criticism for it), I don’t think I was alone in thinking “Holy fuckballs! Thanos is gonna be the villain in THE AVENGERS 2!!!”

And after spending an entire year in preparation for this nerdgasmic event, re-reading my torn and coverless TPB copy of Infinity Gauntlet, which fought a brave war against my 2 year old puppy, but eventually lost… that little fanged bastard… I’ve just learned that Thanos WON’T be in The Avengers 2.

At least, that’s what the geek news sites are tossing around on this fine Monday afternoon. They surmised as much from this interview with the Great Ginger God while he made the press rounds for IRON MAN 3 (btw, Marvel is really whoring out their Avengers roster for Phase 2).

“Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful; he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about The Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”

How about we just make this guy the hero and villain of Avengers 2, and call it a deal?

That’s it, huh? That’s why we’re so upset? That certainly doesn’t discount an appearance from Thanos in the next flick, but I suppose it doesn’t seem like the big purple badass will be the primary antagonist… which is underwhelming. Marvel’s already experienced enough backlash for shamelessly exploiting their Phase 1 movies to build the foundations of THE AVENGERS, and if they decide to do the same thing with their Phase 2 movies (all in hopes of a massive Phase 3 payoff), then they’ll have single handedly produced the world’s largest buzzkill.

Although… that pacing would be oddly similar to that of the original Star Wars trilogy. The Emperor was always the main baddie in those films, and he wasn’t revealed until Return of the Jedi (ignoring that weird, frog-faced appearance in The Empire Strikes Back).

What do you think of all this? You already know my opinion (this is kinda lame!), but I’m sure you guys have something else to say on the matter.
