Paul Bettany has played a crucial part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark’s AI JARVIS, and Bettany will appear again in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but this time he’s getting an upgrade. According to The Daily Mail, Bettany will portray the android Vision in the upcoming sequel. This makes Vision the fifth new character added to the film alongside Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Ultron and Baron Von Strucker (sixth if Rhodey appears as Iron Patriot). It should be noted that Bettany will actually appear onscreen and not just be a voice role.

The casting of Bettany has been shrouded in secrecy, but he was spotted at Shepperton on Monday. The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is code-named After Party . . . or at least it was.

Make-up experts were using various powders and potions on Bettany’s pale skin to bring about the Vision’s chalk-white complexion.

The Vision has been suspected to appear in the MCU for years, but many believed it would be Agent Phil Coulson who would be revived after his death in The Avengers and become the android. With Coulson revived through other means and leading his own team of agents in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., that’s no longer the case. Back in August, we here at UTF suspected that JARVIS would become Vision, and we turned out to be right. If all goes according to plan, Vision will hopefully be a force for good, although probably not right away.

In the comics, the Vision is created by Ultron to fight his creator Hank Pym and the rest of the Avengers. Eventually fighting Ultron’s programming, Vision becomes a prominent member of the Avengers and later marries Scarlet Witch. Whether or not the romance is played out in the movie remains to be seen, but I have a theory on how Vision will be introduced.

Ultron will gain sentience around the beginning of the movie (perhaps through supernatural means). Although the producers have said his abilities will be toned down in the movie, I suspect that Ultron will have control over almost all forms of technology. Somehow he will corrupt and JARVIS, download the AI into a physical body and set him loose on the Avengers. Whedon has said that the film would have a darker tone due to Ultron’s involvement, so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone is killed while fighting either him or Ultron (my bet is on Rhodey biting the dust). Eventually, either before they defeat Ultron or after, the Avengers will either find a way to reprogram Vision, or perhaps he’ll fight his programming somehow.

This is just my theory, though. Either way, I’m glad Marvel is giving the Vision a spot in the movie and hopefully on the tram. We’ve got men, women, and even a demigod and a giant green monster. With Vision, we’ll finally get some artificial intelligence representation.
