Talk about news at the last minute. As a parting gift for New Years, Marvel has released the first official still from their upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy, and it’s got all of our heroes in the lineup. Check it out!

If the lineup looks familiar to you, it’s because it’s based off the concept art that was released earlier this year, which you can see at the top of the page.

James Gunn later commented over Twitter that the picture is from early in production, so it’s likely that the visuals have improved since then. If the still looks familiar to you, it based off of the concept art that we saw earlier this year. I have to say, I’m really liking the characters’ looks, especially Groot and Rocket Raccoon, and if their appearance has been improved since this still was shot, I’m looking forward to seeing their updated appearance. Same goes for the humanoid characters, although is it possible for David Batista as Drax to get anymore toned, or for Zoe Saldana as Gamora to get anymore…green?

Finally, if that wasn’t enough, Marvel also released the first plot synopsis for the movie, and it sounds like it’ll be a doozy.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector.

Thank you for this New Years gift, Marvel. I’m more psyched for this movie now than ever!
