NYCC 2012: Clark Gregg To Star As Agent Coulson In Marvel’s SHIELD TV Series

Well, this is surprising. News just broke from New York Comic-Con 2012 from Joss Whedon and Kevin Fiege themselves that Agent Coulson hasn’t completely disappeared from the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet. “Ever heard of a Life Model Decoy? Coulson lives,” said Clark Gregg as he took to the stage at the Marvel Television panel to announce his involvement in their new TV series based on SHIELD.

“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that. From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality,” said Joss.

Fiege then commented, “there was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson!,” prompting Whedon to reply with, “he’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.” When I read this news, my first thought was ‘WTF!?!?’, which was quickly followed by ‘SHIT YES!’. There’s three ways this could play out:

  • 1. The Agent Coulson who died in The Avengers was an LMD placed there to bring the Avengers together.
  • 2. The Coulson that will appear on the SHIELD show is an LMD designed by Tony Stark or someone.
  • 3. The show is a prequel to The Avengers.

Anyway, what do you think of this news? Are you happy that Agent Coulson will continue to live on in the MCU? Share your thoughts below.
