NATALIE PORTMAN Doubts She’ll Appear in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

I’m still not 100% sure how Marvel’s managed to nab so many A-list leading ladies for their “damsel in distress” roles. Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Natalie Portman (sorry, I adore Hayley Atwell as much as the next fanboy, but she isn’t exactly the top tier of Hollywood)… every last one of these actresses held far more box office clout than their male counterparts. So why’d they choose to play second fiddle?

Well, in a recent interview, Natalie Portman playfully lamented that she’d never become a superhero, saying:

“I think I blew it. Because once you are Jane, then you are like, ‘Oh my God, I am a superhero over here,’ then you can’t be another character in a Marvel movie.”

Fair enough. Waste of an amazing actor, but fair enough. I certainly wouldn’t want to watch Jane Foster transform into a bizarre superhero version of herself. If they were to even approach such a story, I’m sure they’d lean too greatly on Thor’s mythos, and transform Portman into a pseudo-Valkyrie… which is just plain Jane boring (terrible pun intended).

Though, I would hope to see Natalie Portman, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Again, sorry to Atwell (and Liv Tyler) but their characters aren’t as central to their respective heroes.

More to the point, though, Portman candidly stated that she probably won’t return for Age of Ultron. Saying…

“I don’t think I would fit in very well. They are all superheroes. (laughs) […] They haven’t asked me, so we will see.”

Well, what do you think? Relegating Portman and Paltrow to “girlfriend duty” seems like an absolute waste of talent.
